All it wanted was that people should not, through neglect or ignorance, become disabled or crippled, and thus robbed of health, productivity and joy, and that disabled persons especially in rural India should have access to medical services wherever they be. On 16th of July, 1991, this dream came true, when Impact India's Lifeline Express, the world's first hospital on a train, was launched. Over 400,000 Indians have so far benefited from the remarkable train, and other countries have come forward to start their Lifeline Express on which major surgeries have been performed to restore movement, hearing, sight and correction of clefts. As the dream comes of age today on its 16th Anniversary, Impact proves that when the vision is clear, and the will is firm, hands will always rise to help, and that the human spirit resolved to reach out to help cannot be stopped. You, too, can help. * UPA Chairperson, Honourable Sonia Gandhi's address at the inauguration of the new five-coach Lifeline Express on July 12 th, 2007 at the National Rail Museum, New Delhi Extracts from Honourable Union Railway Minister Lalu Prasad's address at the inauguration of the new five-coach Lifeline Express on July 12 th, 2007 at the National Rail Museum, New Delhi. The Magic Train of India Miraculously, a hospital that comes to its patients "You know," said Jawaharlal Nehru one day, " sometime you ought to use a train, the Indian Railways. It is most efficient and covers every village. " When Pandit Nehru voiced himself to Sir John Wilson, a prominent British Advocate for the disabled, founder of IMPACT, little did Panditji realize that his words would some day germinate the concept of a hospital-train. The leaders of Impact India took up the challenge of turning Sir John's idea into reality and created the Lifeline Express ( Jeevan Rekha ), bringing the benefits of modern medicine free of cost to millions of poor villagers in rural India. The Train carries hope for the crippled children of India The Lifeline Express, the world's first hospital on a train, for outreach into inaccessible rural areas where medical services are not available; offering on-the-spot diagnostic, medical and advanced surgical treatment for preventive and curative interventions for the handicapped, using the Indian Railway Network which is the largest in the world comprising about 63,500 kilometres of tracks. The LIFELINE EXPRESS hospital train has become a model for transfer of Indian appropriate technology to setting up similar projects in China, Zimbabwe and a hospital river boat "Jibon Tori", in Bangladesh. This project has been developed in collaboration with the Indian Railways and Health Ministry. It has been funded by Impact UK, international charitable sources, Indian corporate houses and individuals. · Restoration of sight through cataract operations and providing Intra Ocular Lenses (Assessment of curvature of cornea by a Keratometer) · Restoration of hearing through surgery and supply of hearing aids * Correction of clefts through surgery * Counselling and referral services · Follow-up of patients' progress through arrangements with local authorities · Preventive services in the form of immunization, administration of nutrients, and creating health awareness among the deprived in the neglected rural and semi-urban areas · Opportunity provided to medical and other voluntary personnel to work in a unique field situation · Teaching surgeons, working in smaller towns, the finer skills of micro-surgery · Training health workers, doctors and other Non-Government Organisation's on various health issues Top By ensuring access to such services for the needy and the deprived in the remote areas, the Lifeline Express not only renders a much needed service but also raises the efficiency level of the existing local government and voluntary health infrastructure. It also encourages the local bodies of the area, who are involved in all aspects of the programme, to provide follow-up services after the Lifeline Express has departed. It leaves behind much greater awareness and a better motivated administration for the handicapped. It serves a similar purpose among the voluntary agencies and the general population. And last but not the least, it creates awareness about this easily replicable project. At the macro level too, the Lifeline Express creates awareness and motivation for the cause of the handicapped, across a wide cross section, since various agencies particularly the Government, business houses, voluntary organisations and individual volunteers are involved in each programme. The extensive media interest which the Lifeline Express invariably generates also aids this process and consequently, the impact generated is beyond the medical services provided by each individual Lifeline Express project. Impact India and its Lifeline Express are committed to combat the appalling loss of productive life and economic
